Epson is expanding its print-and-cut lineup with the introduction of the SureColor S7170 Print Cut Edition. The system combines the SureColor S7170 64-inch roll-to-roll solvent printer, Summa S1 D140 cutter and workflow software. It is intended for sign shops producing applications such as indoor and outdoor signage, stickers, banners, canvas prints and vehicle wraps.
The SureColor S7170 Print Cut Edition provides the printer, cutter and software as a single system for print-and-cut applications.
The SureColor S7170 is designed for sign shops that print on multiple substrates and do not require a higher-production printer. It uses a four-color UltraChrome GS3 solvent ink set and Epson Precision Dot technology. Compared with the previous generation, the printer uses a 1.33-inch PrecisionCore Micro TFP printhead and a precise media handling system to increase print speed.1 Nozzle Verification Technology supports stable operation, and a temperature sensor positioned closer to the nozzle plate helps improve color consistency. A new Ink Supply System uses 800 mL ink packs2 instead of cartridges to reduce plastic use and decrease replacement frequency.
The Summa S1 D140 has a 54-inch cutting width and includes an OPOS sensor system for reading registration marks. Its drag knife provides up to 600 grams of pressure for cutting laminated designs and other media. The OPOS Xtra feature supports the processing of detailed sticker jobs. The cutter also includes barcode-based workflow automation for print-and-cut jobs to reduce manual intervention.
Additional features include:
- Media handling – The printer includes media feed and take-up systems designed to produce prints for cutting.
- Media compatibility – Supports materials including vinyl, banners, canvas and paper.
- Operating costs – The system is designed for straightforward maintenance and has a lower initial cost than higher-production systems. Epson also cites higher production speeds compared with the SureColor S40600.
- Software and monitoring – Includes Epson Edge Print PRO and a prepaid one-year subscription to ONYX Go Plus for print-and-cut workflows. Epson Cloud Solution PORT³ is available for printer monitoring.

1 Compared to the previous generation. Print speeds are based on the print engine speed only. Total throughput time for any print depends on various factors including workstation configuration, file size, print resolution, ink coverage and networking. Actual print speeds will vary.
2 Part of the ink from the first cartridges/packs is used for initializing the printer. Ink usage will vary considerably based on images printed, print settings, paper type, frequency of use, temperature and humidity. Variance may be more pronounced when printing infrequently or predominantly with one ink color. Ink is used for printing and printer maintenance, and all colors must be available for printing. For print quality, a variable amount of ink remains after the “replace ink” indicator comes on.
3 All features of this system require an active Internet connection and the use of a supported browser.
